I was glad to discover these 3-stage filters on Amazon. I plan on using one of them in a system without a water softener, yet still want to condition the water and ensure that my pipes remain scale-free.
I’m not sure what “silica-phosphate” beads are. Perhaps they are polyphosphate beads for conditioning water or ceramic-polymer beads which use the TAC (Template Assisted Crystallization) method for conditioning water. Regardless, either one is a great way to go if you do not have or do not want a water softener for removing calcium and magnesium via ion exchange but you still need to prevent scale from forming. The nice thing about this type of filter is, though you have to replace it when it expires, you will never have to buy salt.
The item information indicates these filters might not function well for well water. However, I think if one were paired with a filter containing KDF-85 filtration media or green sand, which greatly reduces iron and hydrogen sulfide, it should work very well. You would also get the benefit of making your water more biologically safe.
One thing is for sure, your family and all of your appliances which use water, should reward you with much longer lives by reducing and/or removing the contaminants which shorten them.
Here’s my assessment of these filters thus far: ✅ They install easily and should seal well in any standard 4.5“ x 10” filter housing. Just drop them into that type of housing, add a little food-grade silicon grease to the O-rings, flush the filter for a few minutes, and you’re done. ✅ They are said to filter 30,000 gallons. That’s impressive, but it is just an average. All will depend on the quality of your incoming water source. ✅ They are capable of filtering down to 5 microns—nice for a 3-stage, all-in-one type filter. ✅ The nice thing about these filters is: they incorporate 3 stages. When filtering municipal water, they will effectively reduce sediments, chlorine, chloramines, many VOCs, foul tastes and odors, and the magnesium, calcium, and other minerals which cause scale. For that reason, if I only had one filter in my whole house system, it would be one of these. ✅ They are labeled as food safe, lead and BPA-free. ✅ I weighed them, and they are fairly hefty (see picture), indicating to me that they contain a good amount of activated coconut carbon and sediment filtration media.
❌ Though they are said to be food safe, lead and BPA-free, no independent laboratory testing is provided which would confirm compliance with NSF/ANSI standards. For that reason alone, I am rating them 4-stars instead of 5. That said, this one thing doesn’t prevent me from recommending them. I have other PUREPLUS filters which are independently tested that I like very much. In the past, I have also interfaced with the company and they proved very helpful. So, a thumbs-up from me so far.
Yet to install the unit but will be doing a follow up. It’s been a year since I installed a whole house setup and chose a descaling filter with a standard 5mg from a different company. Had to ditch the regular one because it restricted the flow so much that the first six months I just had the descaler in. It worked OK spots were reduced, but did return and when I purchased a new one from that company, I put the old one in the number one position in the new one in the number two position closest to the house line. So I’ve had a small amount of experience with this type of filters. They arrived and when I was inspecting them and putting them in the queue to go in next, I noticed that they actually make a noise or have loose particles inside of them. Unlike the first ones purchased, and I have high hopes that they will do a much better job than the previous descaling filters clearly they’re made of different internal substances and since I know it’s not working very well these could be great and they’re half the price and that there is a win-win and it’s best possible way.
Love this filter! We put it in our camper and it has made a world of difference. We can drink the water from the sink and cook with it with no worries. Water tastes great, zero odor, easy to install.
I got this two filter set for my whole house water filter system. These filters fit 10 x 4.5 in filter housing. They are heavy duty per the label on the filter itself. The filter is used on my well water and does a great job of filtering contaminants in the water such as odor sediment dirt sand rust and scale. The water looks clear and cool. It's a great value as well as you get two filters for the price.
Getting clean water can be hard depending on where you are. At my place they have a water tower, but I get sand in the water that plugs up my faucets. So installing this gave me clean water and was easy to setup and use.
While not the surface area of a pleated sediment feature, the 5 micron size is one of the smallest levels available. That sediment-free water then entered an internal carbon filter. Where particulate material is filters, the water is conditioned by the carbon designed to remove odor and such. This fits the basic whole house filter. Designed to. Last 30k gallon of filter ife or capacity, again a good amount of time before needing replacement. You get 2 in the box, good enough for a year under the change every 6 month rule. This is an easy swap, just remove the old and in with the new.
I’m using this PUREPLUS 10" × 4.5" scale‑inhibitor + sediment combo filter in my whole‑house housing, and it’s been working exactly the way I need it to. It fits perfectly in my 10" × 4.5" setup, seals cleanly, and the flow stays strong without any noticeable pressure drop. This is actually the second time I’ve purchased this brand, and both times the filters have performed really well.
The multi‑layer design does a good job catching sediment while also helping reduce scale buildup, which is a nice bonus for protecting plumbing and appliances. Installation is simple, and I haven’t had any issues with leaks or odd tastes in the water. For a standard heavy‑duty housing, it’s a solid, dependable option.
Overall, I’ve been happy with PUREPLUS filters, and this one continues to work very well in my system.

I have often used the PurePlus brand of water filters for my GE 10x4.5 filter. This is the first time that I have used the PPO - scale reducing style. I find there filters hold up very well and do a great job at removing particulate removal.
Fits the unit just like the OEM filter. Makes a good seal in the housing and with a new O ring and a dab of silicone the entire unit is tight and leak free. I have a bit of iron/magnesium and get some H2S produced by iron-reducing bacteria -- the activated carbon removes the odor and delivers clear, odorless water at the tap.
I anticipate that the PPO material reduction of the metallic ions will provide the carbon to have great functionality.
PurePlus often has multi-packs that provide very competitive value.
